"Landfill Harmonic" and "Skateistan"
I'm working away on my latest set of dolls (which will take some time to complete) so in the meantime I will be blogging about art, music or films that I find interesting. Which brings me to two documentaries that have really piqued my interest lately~ Skateistan and Landfill Harmonic.
Afghanistan's Girl Skaters – Kabul 2012 from Skateistan on Vimeo.
Skateistan is about a co-educational school in Kabul, Afghanistan that provides skateboarding and educational programming to children, forty percent of which are girls. Though the trailer is somewhat cheerful and uplifting, the actual documentary takes a more serious look at the lives of the children and the circumstances that they and the teachers must face on daily basis. I found the film to be both moving and inspiring. Kudos to the team of skaters, teachers, builders and sponsors who created this school to help out these children. You can read more about the school on their website. To rent the film or purchase it, click here.
Landfill Harmonic takes a look at a group of young musicians from Paraguay (the Recycled Orchestra) who play instruments made from trash and recycled materials. The film has yet to be released but you can keep posted on when it will be, by liking the film's offical facebook page and visiting their website.
Enjoy your weekend!
